Coca-Cola is one of the most iconic beverages in the world, enjoyed by millions every day. But few people know about the man who invented this global sensation. In this blog post, we’ll explore the fascinating history of Coca-Cola, its humble beginnings, and the visionary founder who brought it to life.
The Man Behind the Bottle: Founder of Coca Cola John Stith Pemberton
The founder of Coca-Cola was John Stith Pemberton, a pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia. Born in 1831, Pemberton was a skilled chemist who worked on various medical concoctions throughout his life. After being injured during the American Civil War, he developed a morphine addiction, which led him to experiment with medicinal formulas as alternatives to pain relief. It was during one of these experiments in 1886 that he created the original formula for Coca-Cola.
Pemberton’s original Coca-Cola was intended to be a tonic for common ailments, combining coca leaves and kola nuts, both known for their stimulating properties. It was initially marketed as a cure for headaches, fatigue, and even addiction.
The Birth of Coca Cola
In 1886, Pemberton took his syrup to Jacob’s Pharmacy in Atlanta, where it was mixed with carbonated water and sold as a fountain drink for five cents a glass. While Pemberton’s formula was promising, the beverage didn’t become an instant success. In its first year, Coca-Cola sales averaged only about nine glasses a day.
One of the key contributors to the early branding and marketing of Coca-Cola was Frank M. Robinson, Pemberton’s bookkeeper. He is credited with coming up with the name “Coca-Cola” and designing the iconic script that remains a trademark of the brand to this day.
Pemberton’s Struggles and Selling Coca-Cola
Despite creating a formula that would one day become globally successful, John Pemberton struggled financially and was in poor health. Desperate for money, he began selling parts of his business to different investors. Pemberton never lived to see the full potential of Coca-Cola; he passed away in 1888, just two years after inventing the drink.
The turning point for Coca-Cola came when Asa Griggs Candler, a businessman, purchased the majority of Pemberton’s shares. Candler recognized the potential of the beverage and worked tirelessly to market Coca-Cola across the United States. By the 1890’s, Coca-Cola was a national sensation, thanks to Candler’s innovative marketing strategies.
The Rise of a Global Brand of Coca Cola
Under Candler’s leadership, Coca-Cola expanded rapidly. He focused on mass marketing and distribution, ensuring that the drink was available in pharmacies and soda fountains across the country. The brand’s popularity grew, and by the early 20th century, Coca-Cola had become a household name.
One of the most significant milestones for Coca-Cola was the development of the contour bottle in 1915. The unique design helped the brand stand out from its competitors and remains one of the most recognizable shapes in the world.
Candler’s vision laid the foundation for Coca-Cola’s success, but it was later CEO’s, such as Robert W. Woodruff, who helped transform the company into the global empire it is today.
